Up until recently, we’ve been using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to develop and deploy our websites. FTP works fine, and has done for many years, but there has always been a few downfalls:
- It’s slow. Uploading an entire website could take potentially hours.
- It’s not totally secure. All you need to make an FTP connection is a username and password. Years ago, that would have been more than sufficient. Nowadays, we have newer and more secure technologies.
- Only one person can edit a file at any given time. If two people are working on the same file, they’ll end up overwriting each other’s changes. Not good.
